AIA Potomac Valley Chapter
2005 Design Award Winners

The AIA Potomac Valley Annual Design Award Competition
is held each year in October. The 2005 competition was juried by three architects from the AIA Pittsburgh (PA) Chapter. We sincerely appreciate the commitment of time and energy that these gentlemen unselfishly donated to their fellow members.

Awards (1 Grand Honor Award, 3 Honor Awards, 5 Merit Awards, and 8 Citations) were presented at the Chapter's Year-End Party and Design Awards Banquet in Potomac, Maryland on Sunday, October 30, 2005.

25 Year Building Award

This year, to salute our chapter's 50th Anniversary, a special committee, chaired by Alan Meyers, AIA, selected seventeen buildings, built prior to 1980, to be considered for our 25 Year Building Award. The jury selected the following project....

The Robert E. Lee Residence

Architect: Hugh Newell Jacobsen, FAIA

Location: Washington, DC

Jury Comments: "This is truly a remarkable residential design, which could easily be entered in a design awards competition in 2005 and give other entries a run for their money. Truly a timeless design."

Jury Comments: "Complex program, difficult site, addresses view from street, nice entry moments, program resolution, exterior spaces and relation to building is subtle and sculptural, overhangs and underneath spaces handled successfully, details take you back to exterior – a lot of life in each photograph"
