AIA Potomac Valley Chapter
2007 Design Award Winners

The AIA Potomac Valley Annual Design Award Competition is held each year in October. The 2007 competition was juried by three architects from the AIA West Virginia. We sincerely appreciate the commitment of time and energy that these AIA members unselfishly donated to their fellow members.

Awards (1 Grand Honor Award, 1 Special Recognition Award, and 17 Honor Awards) were presented at the Chapter's Design Awards Celebration in Olney, Maryland on Sunday, October 21, 2007.

GRAND HONOR AWARD
Residential Renovation/Addition

Rural Infill

Architect: Meditch Murphey Architects

Contractor: Lee Levick

Photographer: Maxwell MacKenzie

Jury Comments: "It appears to be a simple little project but behind the surface it is actually very complex. The existing two buildings have a number of issues to be resolved and they were resolved very well with a very simple and well controlled form. Good job of bringing the outside into the space by the use of a lot of glass and corner window. The connection between the two buildings which takes you to the new building with the pergola and the cupola we thought were phenomenal. We were very pleased to award this with the grand honor award."

Special Recognition Award

The LEAF House

Architect: The 2007 UMD Solar Team

Contractor: The University of Maryland 2007 Solar Decathlon Team

Photographer: Kenneth M. Wyner

Jury Comments: "This project earned this special distinction because it is not only a nice interior space that is noteworthy on its own, but it looks to the future and tries to address a pressing need for affordable efficient housing. We were very impressed with the liquid Desiccant dehumidifier technology. We feel the main difference between a great piece of architecture and a good piece of architecture is the quality of thought behind it. Obviously this project has a significant amount of quality thought behind it."

HONOR AWARD
Commercial Renovation

Studio Theatre

Architect: Bonstra Haresign Architects

Contractor: Kfoury Construction Group

Photographer: Dan Cunningham

Jury Comments: "Studio theater is a really nice expansion in the existing buildings. Its strength is to try to cover over or redo the façade but to just take some elements like the neon to try to key you into the idea of a new entry which is used a lot at night. Seems to work very well. The first force pace is mostly the theater force and we appreciate the ability to use the existing window openings as large graphic elements which significantly added to the street."

HONOR AWARD
Mixed Use Residential/Retail

Q14 Condominiums

Architect: Bonstra Haresign Architects

Contractor: Monarc Construction, Inc.

Photographer: Maxwell MacKenzie

Jury Comments: "This is a good mixed use project. Appreciated the residential floors the scaling and the use of materials composition and the mix of the materials. We really liked the expression of the program elements and yet they tie together well in the entry at the retail and the residential and have similarities. The store front that goes with the retail works very well relates to the street and turns the corner nicely. Overall a very well thought out project."

HONOR AWARD
Multi-Family Residential

The Alta at Thomas Circle

Architect: Cunningham | Quill Architects

Contractor: PN Hoffman Construction & Development

Photographer: 85b.jpg

Jury Comments: "We really appreciated the thought that was put into this project the idea of bringing reasonably-priced housing into downtown DC and the detail in how to make it environmentally sensitive. We think the project hits the target quite well - up and coming professionals. We like the use of the exterior space and bringing in common spaces. It is just a quality well thought out."

HONOR AWARD
Commercial Renovation

Caton's Walk

Architect: Cunningham | Quill Architects

Contractor: RB Associates

Photographer: Paul Burk Photography

Jury Comments: "We appreciate how difficulty it must have been to convince the historic preservationists to allow you to put the addition on the top. We really appreciated the historical timeline to show the evolution of the project. We think this is a sensitive project but also enlivens the entire area."

HONOR AWARD
Master Planning

Huntfield Master Plan

Architect: Cunningham | Quill Architects

Contractor:

Photographer:

Jury Comments: "We thought it was important to award a master planning project because this is where we need to go as a profession. We need to think about what we are building prior to the construction. We appreciated the detail at the scale of the project. Obviously there has been a lot of thought behind it. We like to see it has further developed we'd like to see the project completely built."

HONOR AWARD
Commercial Renovation

Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard

Architect: Cunningham | Quill Architects

Contractor: Whalen Construction Company

Photographer: Paul Burk Photography

Jury Comments: "This is the phase one work in Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyards, a very controlled, very sensitive use of an existing barn structure and the existing open space. The project is within a controlled agricultural area and as such the architect understated the addition and created a very nice space. The new addition the winery from the side is done with very sensitive material and massing. We thought it was an exceptional project."

HONOR AWARD
Unbuilt/Mixed Use Development

Takoma Walk

Architect: Cunningham | Quill Architects

Contractor:

Photographer: Renderings by David Walker

Jury Comments: "We appreciate the detail that went to this unbuilt project we understand that tying into the existing fabric really took the attention to detail to bring the scale down to fit into the small town feel. The detailing on the façade a lot of color a lot of texture we just really enjoy the project and the model helped us a lot to understand the massing. Excellent project."

HONOR AWARD
New Residential

Outlook on the Severn

Architect: Donald Lococo Architects

Contractor: Bertram Winchester

Photographer: Donald Lococo/John Dean

Jury Comments: "We really appreciated this project. We totally appreciate the top-down detailing that is done here as this is how most of our sites are in West Virginia. The grand open space on the upper floor is just filled with lighting which is very well controlled by the exterior overhangs. We appreciated the plan and the detailing on this project which is excellent."

HONOR AWARD
Residential Renovation/Addition

Wedge House

Architect: Donald Lococo Architects

Contractor: Macon Construction

Photographer: Donald Lococo/Celia Pearson

Jury Comments: "We realized that this is really a piece of sculpture. It has a lot of different layers and different levels of privacy which is provided. After a lot of discussion we decided that we really like the quality and the workmanship on this façade."

HONOR AWARD
Institutional

Rockville Library

Architect: Grimm + Parker Architects

Contractor: Forrester Construction Company

Photographer: Kenneth M. Wyner

Jury Comments: "On this project we really appreciate the time that was taken on the interiors. The floor patterning and the LED lighting made it a tremendously powerful space. We also like the undulating façade tying the project into the street. The quality of this project is evident in the detailing."

HONOR AWARD
Commercial Interiors

Encore Construction Corporate Headquarters

Architect: The Heiserman Group

Contractor: Encore Construction

Photographer: Michael Dersin

Jury Comments: "This is a small office effectively having windows only on the street façade. It is for a general contractor. We thought it was a very interesting space ... the use of material was very nice. The openness of the offices within the glass was very nice. The dark red walls as a feature was also very nice. We thought the architect made a very nice interior space."

HONOR AWARD
Residential Renovation/Addition

Bedroom Pavilion

Architect: McInturff Architects

Contractor: Timber Ridge Builders

Photographer: Julia Heine

Jury Comments: "We like the scale of the detail of this project. We love the detailing and the amount of light coming into this space. It is a good quality project."

HONOR AWARD
Residential Renovation/Addition

Metal Library

Architect: McInturff Architects

Contractor: Lofgren Construction Company

Photographer: Julia Heine

Jury Comments: "We really appreciated this design. It was such a small addition to the building but bringing the light in from the upper level was a detail that we all loved. We liked the use of the roof of the structure as another living space and the quality of detailing impressed us. We all wanted one of these on our houses as well."

HONOR AWARD
Institutional

Somerset Elementary School

Architect: Muse Architects

Contractor:

Photographer: Alan Karchmer

Jury Comments: "We were very impressed with the articulation of this building especially around the entrance. The architect succeeded in bringing it down to a residential scale not only to fit the neighborhood but also to make it more comfortable for the students who are spending time in this building. We appreciated the level of detail that extended around the building. Scale is reduced by roof lines but there are actual spaces there to be used for the future of the classes to grow which was a nice move. Good project."

HONOR AWARD
Commercial

Whole Foods Market Cleveland

Architect: Mushinsky Voelzke Associates / MV+A

Contractor: MBM Contracting

Photographer: Dan Cunningham

Jury Comments: "Appreciated the interesting use of the rooftop space for parking and how the building relates to the neighborhood and the redeveloping areas in Cleveland. Seeing the sign down the way instead of a monument sign on a pole it is integrated to the architecture. It is a very nice and unique approach to a very familiar design type of grocery stores. We like it very much."

HONOR AWARD
Multi Family Residential

The Visio & Murano

Architect: Sorg & Associates, PC

Contractor: Robertson Develpment

Photographer: Roger Foley Photography

Jury Comments: "We really appreciated the detail of the façade and how well it fits into the surrounding historic architecture. The massing was there the openings were carefully sized the change in the glazing on the first floor as opposed to the recesses on the upper floor all grabbed our attention. We thought this was a quality project. It was very sensitive to the historic neighborhood yet it has a very modern feel."

HONOR AWARD
New Residential

Mohican Hills Residence

Architect: Wiedemann Architects LLC

Contractor: GN Contracting

Photographer: Anise Hoachlander

Jury Comments: "This is a nice use of a very narrow and deep lot. Nice massing. It does a good job of closing up a little bit to the street for privacy and yet opening up to the back for the use of the pool and the back yard. We appreciated the fact that the garage is sealed from the street and is an interesting composition of forms. Nice positive and negative space. Plan organization is great and very clear it's a modest house size and nice to see the orientation and a great use of the standard residential lot."
