Ways to Achieve Your Annual AIA/CES Requirements
Under the new AIA/CES program, members are required to maintain 18 learning units (hours) of continuing education credits per year, of which 8 must be categorized as HSW (Health-Safety-Welfare), in order to maintain their membership in AIA. Here are some ideas on how to accomplish that task:
- Search the AIA Database of Advertised Courses for courses in your area
- Learn to computerize your operations. Take a computer course.
- Learn the latest CADD software - and report it on the Self Report Form.
- Attend an educational program at your local AIA Chapter. See the CHAPTER CALENDAR for upcoming events at AIAPVC.
- Take an online course. For a list of online courses, see our ECourses Page.
- Attend a "Brown Bag" or "lunch-n-learn" activity sponsored by an AIA/CES Registered Provider at your office (e.g., an educational presentation on roofing materials). Search the online AIA Directory of Registered Providers for CES providers local to you.
- Visit the EPIC Project website. The Education/Practice/Industry Connection (EPIC) is a partnership of the schools of architecture, the design profession, and construction industry to enhance professional education and catalogue best practices and innovations.
- If teaching is NOT your full-time job, record the program you teach OR the time you spend researching new information (e.g., codes, designs, structures, etc.) for a presentation, on the Self Report Form.
- On the road traveling? Planning a tour of the city? Identify in advance what you want to learn and then report your learning opportunities on the Self Report Form.
- Spending time researching the latest codes or specifications for a new projects? What new knowledge do you hope to gain that you can apply toward your profession? Record time spent researching this new knowledge for a committee or community group on the Self Report Form.
- Attend a PIA Conference. The 22 PIAs offer more than 40 continuing education programs a year, all over the country. Call AIA Information Central at 1-800-242-3837, or visit the PIA Gateway, for more information.
- Attend the National AIA or Maryland AIA conventions, and get all your learning units in just three days! The next AIA convention is in Charlotte, NC on May 9-11, 2001.
